Summer courses at TENIDIOMAS

Summer will soon be here to melt away the winter blues! What better time to prepare for the PET (B1)or Cambridge English: First (B2). This July we are offering an array of intensive exam preparation courses with the exam taking place at the end of July. On the course you will consolidate and extend your grammar and vocabulary whilst getting to know the exam in detail with specialist tips and strategies to get you through the exam. Tips and advice for your FCE Writing exam

Well done to all of you who sat the practice exam. There were some great ideas but consider the following advice before the next paper 2 exam.

Do not use contractions in formal letters - contractions are fine for informal letters
Try to be consistent in your style - keep it formal or informal but do not mix them up!
Use the correct format for an exam - A report should have subheadings and bullet points.
ALWAYS check your work afterwords. Have you answered all the points? Have you made any spelling mistakes?

Have you all got your writing references? If not, ask your teacher for your copy straightaway. When you are practising at home, use your writing reference to give you ideas for useful language and to see the format.

You have 6 weeks before the exam on December 10th so you should be writing AT LEAST 2 pieces a week. Good luck!

Tips for exam success!

Well done to all our PET, FCE and CAE Express students - You all had a very good start with your exam practice. Here are some hints to help you improve for next time.

Remember to answer all the questions - You do not get marked down if you get an answer wrong so if in doubt, take an educated guess!
Be careful that you do not write more than one answer against a question. A few of you did this and you lost marks!
Be careful that you write the correct answer next to the correct question! This is important as you will not get the marks. Check your answers carefully.

PET Reading and Writing
In Writing part 1 you must write 1 to 3 words. If you write more than three words, you will not get any marks!

In Writing part 2 you must answer all the points. If you do not answer all the points, you will not get full marks even if you answer is grammatically perfect!

Try to remember these tips for the next Reading (FCE B2, CAE C1) and Reading and Writing (PET B1) test you take.

Writing Competition Winners

We had a book- themed competition last month with our students telling us all about their favourite read.

All the teachers were amazed at the quality of the entries and the interest that the children had in reading. come to the school and check out the winners and the runners up.

Our younger winner is Alejandro Nadal Lopez-Cepero -His favourite book is 'Zombie hunter'. It sounds pretty scary and the illustrations he drew were really gory! Well done Alejandro. Here he is celebrating his win with his older brother.

The winner of the 12-16 age group is Santiago Mas Peña. His favourite book is called is callled 'Shadow Hunters'. Come into the school and read the entry if you want to know what it's about! It sounds fascinating!

Christmas Writing competition

Our Competition this year has been particularly festive - our students gave Father Christmas their Christmas wish lists and told him why they deserve their presents. Ity seems like we have some real angels in the academy at the moment as our students all claimed to help their mothers in the house and do all their homework! Well, Father Christmas knows the truth! And it was him that judged our competition this month!

Our winner in the younger age group was Nuria Perez Huerga. She does her homework everyday and would like a doll for Christmas - I hope her wish comes true and Santa brings her all the things she wants.

Our teen winner is Pablo Torres Mozas - Pablo helps his friends with their homework and does chores in his house - He sounds like he deserves his dream present of a play station 3!

Thank you to all our winners and all our students who took part. I'm sure Santa will deliver what you've asked for.

Ghosts, witches and all kinds of things that go bump in the night were order of the day in our halloween lessons.

October's Writing Competition winners!

It's the first Writing Competition of the academic year and so we took the opportunity to find out a little bit more about our students. The topic this month was 'All about me' and students wrote about their hobbies, taste in music and a whole lot more. Blanca Barroso Girón is the winner of the 7-11 age group. She told us how she loved the summer and can ride a bike! Aurora Tello Fernandez is our teens winner - she told us all about her taste of music talking about bands we've never heard of!

We have had a very successful and productive year here at Tenidiomas. Thank you to all our students for their hardwork and dedication.

The Winners of the Writing Competition - April 2010
Our writing competition this month was all about Spring! Our younger students wrote about their favourite clothes for Spring.

Our fabulous winner is Manuel Graván Brú. Manuel has been with the school for a few years now but this is the first time he has won. Congratulations! Here is Manuel celebrating his win with friends from the academy.

Our older students wrote about which season they liked best. Our winner ,Neha Rodriguez , loves the summer and told us that she would love the summer forever! A great entry, Neha - You should be proud of yourself. Her classmates were thrilled with her win and it has inspired them to pull out all the stops for the next writing competition.

A big congratulations to our two fabulous winners. Our Easter themed competition was flooded with entries but we had two clear winners.

Well done to our younger winner Blanca Alonso Jaime. Her design for an Easter egg was fantastic and really cheers up the academy. Here she is with teacher Alan. Both of the winners this month were Alan's students which made him very proud.

Our teen winner is Nuria Castillo Jimenez. She was absolutely thrilled to win. Her classmates were so happy for her too and it's given them the motivation to do better next time. So, don't despair, next time it could be you!

The Winners of the Writing competition - January 2010

Congratulations to our winning students who wowed us with their New Year's Resolutions. Here's hoping you manage to stick to your promises!

Our winner of the 7 -11 age group is Jesus De la Peña Del Valle. Jesus' resolutions included obeying his parents and passing his course. Hope you achieve all your wishes.

Jesus was delighted to win - he is new to the school this year and is enjoying making new friends as well as learning English.

In the 12 -16 age group our winner is Maria Soledad Martín Casero. The judges were very impressed with her resolutions to not argue with her friends and to keep on helping her mum.

Maria has been with us for many years - She is a very talented student who always works hard!

Well done Maria and Jesus! You work was fantastic and really impressed us.

Our exam practice sessions are going from strength to strength. They are very popular and more importantly they provide real-life experience of the exam. Remember - if you are thinking of doing the FCE or CAE in March, the deadline for entries is December 20th. Late entries are accepted but you will have to pay an extra supplement. Express FCE
We could not believe how popular our new express FCE course was. The course was full and feedback has been so positive that we have decided to run a new express course for the next exam session. If you thinking of doing the exam in March and you have a good level of English, you could be accepted onto our FCE exam. The FCE level is equal to the European B2 level and the Escuela Oficial level 5. This level is becoming more and more important so don’t delay, sign up today!
Express PET
Our Express FCE has proved to be such a success that we are expanding our range of ‘express’ courses to include PET. PET is equal to a B1 level within the common European framework. This level will soon become a pre-requisite for university entry and for entry to many professional bodies.
Homework club
The homework club is here to give you extra help. Some students come to every session whereas others come to review a specific area or to ‘swot up’ before exams in their school. All you have to do is sign up at least 24 hours before the session so that we can prepare you with specialised material. The sessions run every Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Exchange Students
This year we will be having lots of visits from our British friends. Students from prestigious schools across the UK will be visiting Jerez to learn Spanish and to prepare for their Spanish exams. We will be taking advantage of this and preparing language exchange classes between our Spanish and English students. This will activate their speaking skills and hopefully foster international friendships! If you are interested in being a host family for our British students, please contact the school and we will give you information on how to do this.

Burlington on-line courses provide six months of intensive yet flexible language practice. The Writing competition winners - November 2009

November already! Soon it will be the exam season here at TENIDIOMAS but before we think about that lets have some fun with the writing competition.

In the 7-11 category this month we have Maria Jaime Belda. The topic was ´my best friend'. Maria told us all about her best friend and how 'very, very,very clever she is' Well done Maria. Here she is with her certificate and book and with her classmates who are so proud that they have a writing competition winner in their group.

In the 12-16 age group we have Francisco Gabriel Uceda Martín. The topic this month was giving advice about how to bring us a baby dragon. Francisco's advice was fantastic but his plans for world domination with the help of his dragon were rather scary!

Here we all are. Francisco and his classmates are busy preparing for the FCE which they will take in June. Almost all of them come along to our weekly practice sessions - they show a lot of motivation.

Cambridge exams

Our express English course is coming to an end. All our express students will be sitting the FCE exam this December. They only have 2 weeks to go! We wish you the very best of luck. A new FCE course is starting in January for those of you who want to take the FCE in March. We are also starting an express PET/B1 group for adults who need the B1 european level for their jobs and career progresion. For more information, contact the school.

The writing competition winners – October 2009

The writing competition has returned and the entries have been better than ever. This month our theme is Halloween.
Our younger writers (age 7 -11) told us about their pet monster! Here is the winner Javier Sanchez Cerdá. You might remember Javier . Yes, he is a second time winner. Well done. Here he is with his class mates and his teacher Rory enjoying his prize.

Our competition for older writers (age 12 -16) was on the subject of spells. We had some truly inventive and spine-chilling entries. Our winner is Patricia Malvida Barranco. Patricia is a new student with TENIDIOMAS. What a fantastic start to her year!

Welcome to the 2009 -2010 academic year at tenidiomas….

A new academic year
We hope all our students had a wonderful summer and that you are all refreshed and ready to start a new, stimulating year learning English.
We have a few changes this year. Children’s classes have been reorganised and are now 60 minutes rather than 90. This offers you more choice and flexibility in you classes.
Sadly, Nick and Tara are not with us this year but please extend a warm welcome to our new teacher, Rory Cummings.
This year, as ever, our focus is on delivering the best quality language training possible. We aim to activate your language and give you the confidence and the skills to take your English to the highest levels possible!

Writing competition
October marks the return of our much-loved writing competition. The age groups are 7- 11 and 12-16. Make sure you check out the topics each month so that you are in with a chance of winning one of our spectacular prizes.

Multi media
If you feel you need extra practice or consolidation of your lessons, look no further than our multimedia centre. We have a range of CD-ROMs to suit your level. Talk to your teacher or Sofia to find the extra material that is perfect for you.
If working at a computer isn’t for you, then remember we have an array of English films with workbooks. You can improve your listening comprehension in the comfort of your own home and at a time that suits you.
Additionally, we have the popular magazine ‘Speak up’ and accompanying audio. This collection features articles on current affairs and culture and contains stimulating comprehension exercises.
For higher levels we have a variety of English language novels for your enjoyment. We highly recommend you take full advantages of the extra resources we have for you at TENIDIOMAS. Remember all our multimedia materials are FREE to students who are enrolled on one of our courses!

Cambridge exam practice
Last year our weekly exam practice sessions were a huge success. Students felt that the extra preparation really helped them to get through the exam. This year our sessions will begin in October. Every Monday at 7pm you will sit one of the papers and get feedback on your progress. Remember, places are limited, so book in advance.

New courses
3 Month FCE intensive
This new intensive course has been specially designed for students who will sit the December 2009 FCE exam. It is a specialised course which will focus on all parts of the exam in a dynamic ‘fast track’ way. Coupled with the weekly exam practice sessions, it offers the perfect solution to students who are looking for an active and effective system for FCE success.

Prize Draw Winner!
As all our students know – every week at TENIDIOMAS one student from each class is awarded a certificate. These certificates are given to students for lots of reasons – good behaviour, speaking English and creative work, for example.
These names are put into the star box. At the end of the year we have a prize draw where all the winners of the certificates have a chance to win a prize.

Sofia, Nick and Tara had the honour of pulling the name out of the star box.

Here is our lucky winner Manuel Alejandro Ucha Daza. Manuel won a book token to spend in La Luna Nueva. Well done Manuel!

End of term
This week is the end of the academic term 2008-09. It has been a great year for students and teachers alike. Thank you for working so hard you all deserve a good holiday!

Congratulations to the winners of this month’s writing competition - Pablo Caballero de Francisco and Jose Antonio Navarro Rodriguez.

What a wonderful response we had to this month’s competition. We had even more entries than last time. As ever, the standard was incredibly high and all our writers made a real effort.

This time our younger writers told us about their pets. Our winner Pablo wrote about his pet German shepherd.
Our teens wrote about winter, Jose Antonio told us about his love for snowboarding.
They were both thrilled to receive their prizes and certificates ( an audio book with Interactive CD-ROM).

On Halloween we had a story telling session. We invented our own scary stories and told them to our classmates. They were scared stiff!

A long time ago in a sweet and humble neighbourhood there was a little home in which a family lived. There were three people in the family; the mother, the father and a little and really beautiful daughter. Everything was normal until one day there was an accident and a terrible fire.

The daughter was upstairs and the parents were not in the house. They were working and they got enough money to pay a babysitter to take care of their daughter. So she was alone in the house and nobody heard her screams of horror as she was being burned. The house was finished, destroyed with the little daughter inside of it.

Afterwards this neighbourhood was a very affluent zone of the city. A family decided to by the land of the, ‘House of the Horror Screams’. They built a new house on there. Each night the dead daughter appeared in exactly the same place where she died but it was now in the living room of the house. But one day she appeared just like when she died, shouting horrible screams of pain that everybody in the house could hear. She told everybody that something horrible will happen. Two days later the house was burnt without any reason, killing every member of the family.

Now, nobody will build a house on there. Recently, the house has been built again and it’s ready to be bought. Would you like to the next?

Once upon a time there was a man who worked in a shopping centre. He had a normal life but one day during his day he started to see himself doing other things that he wasn’t doing in the changing room’s mirror. He looked at the other side of the room and when he saw the mirror again he was still seeing himself. So he tried to leave the room but he couldn’t because the door was locked. Then the reflection of the mirror killed himself. The next day the shopping centre burned and a lot of people died. It was an enormous disaster but the mirrors of all the shopping centre were untouched. A new shopping centre was built there with everything new except the mirrors.

A new man started to work in the same place as the other man. He had a family and children. One day he saw, in one of the mirrors of the shopping centre, a handprint. He tried to clean it but he couldn’t. He was a bit scared so when he returned home he told his family. He started to be obsessed with the mirrors. He started to see himself burning in flames in the mirrors but he wasn’t really burning although he thought he was!

Suddenly, he saw a name written in the mirror. So he looked at the name and he discovered a mad woman that was in a convent.

The woman in the convent told him that her spirit had been trapped in the mirror. He helped her set her spirit free. In the end she was free and the mirrors went back to normal.

This month we launched our exciting writing competition and all of our students from 7 years old to 16 were invited to enter. We were delighted that so many of you took part. Hemos llevado a cabo un intercambio con nuestros estudiantes obteniendo grandes resultados ya que tanto los españoles como los ingleses encontraron la idea muy acertada y disfrutaron poniendo a prueba el conocimiento del idioma que estudian. Once again all the staff of Tenidiomas gather for the annual "caseta lunch" in the Feria del Caballo held here in Jerez every month of May.

The Feria del Caballo is perhaps the most emblematic festival to take place here in the city, a whole week during which everybody, locals and visitors alike, make their way to the Gonzalez Hontoria Park on the main Avenue in order to visit the different casetas and sip a glass of cold fino sherry whilst tasting the range of tapas offered by each, dance Sevillanas and chat with friends both old and new.

La experta en protocolo, Diane Mather, ha pasado por Jerez para explicar nociones básicas sobre saber estar.

Según la fundadora de la empresa Public Image, «con este curso trato de transmitir los conocimientos básico sobre cómo presentarse, hablar en público, etiqueta en la mesa y social, destrezas sociales y protocolo internacional», entre otros ámbitos. Y es que el contenido inestimable de los cursos incluye: etiqueta social, porte y conducta, potenciar el color y estilo, etiqueta en la mesa, el arte del conversar, educando la voz, oratoria, destrezas sociales y protocolo internacional.

Durante algunas horas, Diane explicó con ejemplos muy interpretativos y explicativos a los allí presentes, en inglés, todo lo relacionado con protocolo. A todo ello se le une la importancia de impartir estas clases magistrales en Jerez porque la empresa Tenidiomas, que colabora estrechamente con Public Image y con sede en la ciudad, tiene importantes negocios relacionados tanto con el turismo como con el idioma, por lo que «es muy importante recibir estas clases de protocolo», asegura Gerry Rylance, director de Tenidiomas. Además, cuenta que «aprovechamos la sinergia entre el flamenco, los idiomas y el turismo».

Concretamente, el escenario elegido para impartir estas nociones de Protocolo fueron las instalaciones de Villa del Duque. Un lugar idóneo ya que se trata de uno de los enclaves más completos «porque en el interior de las instalaciones se sitúa una bodega, siendo el único sitio en Jerez con esta opción, acercando el mundo del vino jerezano», asegura Francisco Alfonsín, responsable de Villa del Duque.

Diane Mather y su equipo contaron con un catering a cargo de Churchill's Restaurant, que recibió con lógica gratitud que una de las personas más importantes en protocolo contara con su buen saber hacer gastronómico

Halloween es una fiesta proveniente de la cultura céltica que se celebra principalmente en Estados Unidos en la noche del día 31 de octubre. Los niños se disfrazan para la ocasión y pasean por las calles pidiendo dulces de puerta en puerta. Después de llamar a la puerta los niños pronuncian la frase "Truco o trato" o "Dulce o truco" (proveniente de la expresión inglesa "trick or treat"). Si los adultos les dan caramelos, dinero o cualquier otro tipo de recompensa, se interpreta que han aceptado el trato. Si por el contrario se niegan, los chicos les gastarán una pequeña broma, siendo la más común arrojar huevos o espuma de afeitar contra la puerta.

La palabra Halloween es una derivación de la expresión inglesa All Hallow's Eve (Víspera del Día de los Santos). Se celebraba en los países anglosajones, principalmente en Canadá, Estados Unidos, Irlanda y el Reino Unido. Pero actualmente se celebra en casi todos los países occidentales con mayor o menor presencia.

Visita a Sherry Golf

Como ya hemos comentado, en Tenidiomas siempre intentamos ofrecerle lo mejor a nuestros estudiantes. Os colgamos una serie de fotografías y videos del último intercambio cultural que tuvieron nuestros alumnos con los estudiantes de Watford Grammar School for Boys. La experiencia les pareció apasionante y al término de la misma se mostraron más seguros de su nivel de inglés.
